National Freedom Army Responsible for the Ambush
Puncak Jaya, MAJALAH SELANGKAH -- National Freedom Army of West Papua of The Free Papua Movement (TPN-OPM) claimed responsibility for the ambush last Thursday (Feb, 21).
In the biggest
clash so far in the history of the movement in West Papua 8 soldiers of
Indonesian National Army were dead. The incident also claimed 4 civilians
working in the building in Sinak Subdistrict, Puncak Jaya, West Papua.
Those killed in
the action are as follow: First Sergeant Ramadhan, Private Edi, Chief Private
Jojo Wiharja, Private Mustofa, Chief Private Wempi, Private Udin, Private
Frans, and Private Wahyu Prabowo. While First Lieutenant Reza was
injured.
While the
civilians dead in the ambush were: Yohanis, Uli, Markus, while another one
remained unidentified so far. The injured were Joni, Ronda, Rangka, and
Santin.
Specialized
staf of General of National Freedom Army Gen. Goliath Tabuni said the shoot of
8 Indonesian army was TPN-OPMs attitude toward Indonesian Army. He refused his
name to be mentioned.
Right. The
shooting was TPN-OPMs attitude. We are responsible. We shot them to deprive
them out of our territories. We are free! Who you are? said NE
emotionally.
Further he
explained, Tingginambut and West Papua is our land. Who say to come to disturb
us. This is our territory. We sent an official letter to the TNI. In the letter
we said not to build any post within our territory. They didnt listen to, he
said.
However, he
said, the shooting was not based merely on establishment of military post. All
of us know. Goliath has been inaugurated as the general army of the TPN-OPM on
Dec 11, 2012 in Tingginambut. The inauguration was in accordance to the TPN-OPM
Summit in Biak on May 1-5 2012. Goliath is fighting to win political right. We
deny all sort of offering, but independence for West Papua, said NE.
Another source
for majalahselangkah.com who just arrived from
Puncak Jaya to Nabire, on Friday (Feb, 22) delivered a different
information.
He said, in
case of Sinak, those building workers were met by TPN-OPM on the way. Then, the
TPN-OPM asked for stuff they were bringing but they refused to give.
Eventually, the
TPN-OPM shot dead the 4 civilians. Afterward, the army on watch came to the
site of the shooting. Prior to the arrival of the indonesian army, the TPN-OPM
had been hiding out in the location of the incident.
Right after the
fully equipped armys coming, TPN-OPM in the hiding shot them and caused some
fatalities on the half of the Indonesian army.
The informant
said, the army ran after the TPN-OPM who were running into jungle. He
explained, the shooting were still continous since Indonesian army proceded to
chase them. People were fleeing.
SBYs Sudden Meeting, OPM Chased
Due to the
shooting in West Papua, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono cancelled his
scheduled visit to Dawuhan Village in Karawang last Friday morning. Instead of
it he held a closed cabinet meeting to discuss the incident.
The meeting
arrived at the point that the president ordered to chase actors of the
shooting. Following up the presidents command, Coordinating minister of
Politics, Law, and Security Djoko Suyanto had the Indonesia National Army and
Indonesian Police to chase agents of the ambush.
As released by vivanews.com
on Thursday (Feb, 21), in the press conference held in his office, Djoko said
that he had been ordered to chase the agent. I have commanded Pangdam and
Kapolda to immediately coordinate, synergize to chase and bring the actors
involved in the incident before the law, he said.
The minister
also said, the police and TNI would evaluate deeply the SOP (standard operating
procedure). The evaluation would be done in the procedure of the activity of
TNI/the police outside the post as well as the number of equipment supply and
sufficient troops in line with the troubled level of territory.
Concerning the
possible military operation, Thursday (Feb, 21) night in Metro TV, Chief of the
Center of Information of National Army, Rear Admiral Iskandar Sitompul said
that military operation was dependent on the decision of the highest command,
which is the president.
He also said
that so far the number of the troops sent to Papua had not been increased.
However, he affirmed that more troops were missioned to Puncak Jaya from
Kodam Cenderawasih.
It was not
confirmed yet whether the Indonesian army would use well-equipped helicopter
recently bought from the US with 1,5 Billions or not in the chase of the
TPN-OPM.
As released by wpnla.net,
the TPN-OPM had stated their readiness if Indonesian army and police were
running after them.
Commander Murib
said, In case Indonesian army and militarized brigade were chasing us, we are
ready to shoot and that the TPN-OPM will not set aback. TPN will defend and
fight the army and police.
People Fleed to Church
Simon, a
citizen of Puncak Jaya, said that these days people were fleeing to churches.
He added that some more others were running to hide in jungle. We are in a
church. Some more are running to jungle, said Simon.
Many
troops are here. They keep coming. We are afraid. We are afraid. Kids start
feeling hungry, said Simon.
Pastor Dorman
Wandikbo also said, Christian community of Gidi Church in Tingginambut, Puncak
Jaya searched for a safe place. This was due to the combing which had already
been launched to find actors of the ambush. They did it in the night until dawn
in kampongs.
Pastor Wandikbo
said that the combing was frightening. In the combing the Indonesian military
would do so foolhardy and victimize civilians, without any control of another
party.
Simon said, In
case the victim was civilians, the combing would be carried out with arrest and
torture. While, now the victim are military. In this case, the fall were TNI.
So now we are all in danger.
Whereas the
Forum of Communication of Papuan Students in Semarang (Forkompas), Friday
(Feb,21) asked Indonesian President to take some consideration in to deal
with conflict in Papua.
Forkompas
activist, Bernardo Boma, said to majalahselangkah.com the
victims were many and this happened for the first time but actually it was not
a brand new problem in Papua.
He expected
that SBY be wise to solve problems in Papua. Military approach would not work
properly. We believe that aggravated military operation will happen in Puncak
Jaya. We dont know how many people will be detained, tortured, and killed in
jungle and city, said Boma.
Dumupa: Papua Political Status Discontent
The secretary
of Customary Working Group of Papuan People Assembly (Majelis Rakyat Papua,
MRP), Yakobus Dumupa said that the shooting should be understood as a manifest
of problem concerning political status of West Papua in Unitary State of
Republic of Indonesia, which had never been addressed properly.
Even, he said,
many West Papuan assessed that the referendum of 1969 had been discordant and
manipulated.
The ambush in
Tingginambut and those happened previously committed by TPN-OPM were in fact a
manifest of their discontent toward political status of West Papua teritorry
within Indonesia, he said.
He asked, all
parties shoud not simplify and limit the problem as to a problem of armed
separatist movement. Such an approach instead should thrive West Papuans
resistence toward Indonesian government.
For the reason,
Dumupa suggested that the two parties should sit on the same table and open for
each other to discuss the political status of West Papua within Indonesian
state honestly and valuably.
Dont ever
hide out any historical and legal fact concerning the integration process of
West Papua into Unitary State of the Indonesian Republic. Why? Because such
honesty will solve the problem comprehensively so that all short of violence
might be ended, he said.
He added,
Without discussing and sharing the same table, all armed violence in West
Papua, both by TPN-OPM and Indonesian army and police would never end.
From time to
time lives would just fall down in both sides. If that happens, we actually
really fail to respect human lives and God who creates human being. Necesarrily
we dont have any chance to live in the heaven afterlife, he said.
Ijie: Stop war and Put Humanity Ahead
The deputy of
People Council of Papua Barat Province, Jimmy Demianus Ijie, asked the
government not to set West Papua as a battle field.
Please
dont set West Papua as a battle filed, but give us peace, he said in the
office of DPDs chief in Jakarta as released by tribunnews.com, Friday
(Feb, 22).
Ijie said,
people of West Papua had never felt Indonesias independence. What really
exists, Ijie continued, the life of West Papuan flew away.
Human right
activist, Yones Douw said, Tingginambut was a battle field so that troops
positioned there should keep on watch.
The upper,
(Tingginambut, red.), is a battle field. Troops must be alert, he said.
We,
human rights workers asked states apparatuses to put humanity ahead and Human
Right values in the chase of the actors. We are very apprehensive about civil
people, he said.
He added,
based on the experience of the past, the act of retaliation often times comes
up as burning, arrest and torture of civil people.
OPM and army
please find one another but dont ever people be the victiom, he said.
While the Papua
church leader, Benny Giay perceive that the option to set military operation
and the increase in the number of militer personel to overcome violence in West
Papua would be futile but prolong the list of victims and just make people
suffer.
He said, that
central government should open itself to settle the radical problem in West
Papua in a dignified manner, not to add the military personels.
